This past year there has been a significant rise in the offerings and sales of alcohol free beers. Why is there a sudden interest in an alcohol-free alternative to the much-loved adult beverage?

Alc free beers as of 2024 make up only 0.7% of the beer sales in the UK, however post covid there has been a large increase in interest for non-alcoholic alternatives. This rise has been influenced heavily by Millennials and Gen Z, seeking healthier alternatives and more responsible drinking trends.

This year the market has seen a multitude of big brand names and independent craft breweries releasing a variety of low & no alcohol options. The bigger brands have expanded their product range, many introducing a fruit infused option for added flavour; meanwhile craft breweries all over the country have introduced more variety, alcohol free stouts, lagers, IPAs and even sour beers furthering the offering to market. Mergers and acquisitions as well as collaborations and joint ventures have also prompted the low and no market growth.

There’s more acceptance of the low and no options that are now offered on the market, the alternatives that were previously quite thin in mouthfeel and lacking in flavour, have now evolved into fuller bodies and flavourful beverages due to more innovative brewing methods and the use of higher quality ingredients. The products now available to consumers range from the pub favourites such as Heineken and Guinness to Cloudwater margarita gose, Hammerton peanut butter stout and our own Brewski Peach Pale Ale. Low and no alcohol beers are evolving with customer demand.

In June this year, Tesco stated they’d seen a 25% increase in sales of alcohol free than they had in the previous 12 months. Guinness also stated production of their 0.0% stout had almost tripled in the past year. Pubs across the country saw a 23% increase in low and no sales, with around 85% of pubs now having an alternative option available. The industry is moving past the ‘Dry Jan’ and ‘Sober October’ trends and embracing the idea of low and no becoming an alternative to be enjoyed on every occasion throughout the year.
