Here at Renegade Brewery, we’re passionate about the rich history of beer, and few styles embody that history quite like stout. Its roots are firmly planted in English soil, a testament to the ingenuity and evolving tastes of brewers past. So, let’s raise a glass and delve into the fascinating story of how England gave the world this iconic dark brew.

From London’s Docks to Global Domination: The English Stout Story

The tale begins in 18th-century London, a bustling port city where porter reigned supreme. This dark, robust ale was a favourite amongst the working class, prized for its strength and affordability. As brewers sought to cater to evolving tastes, they began experimenting with stronger, more intense versions of porter. These “stout porters,” as they were initially known, were essentially higher-alcohol, more heavily roasted variations of the original porter. The term “stout” itself, meaning “strong” or “proud,” reflects this increased potency.

The key to stout’s distinctive dark colour and rich flavour profile lies in the malt. English brewers pioneered the use of roasted barley and dark malts, a technique that imparted those signature coffee, chocolate, and roasted notes. This innovation, born from the industrial heart of England, laid the foundation for the diverse range of stouts we enjoy today.

English Innovations: Shaping Stout Varieties

  • The Rise of the “Foreign Extra Stout”: As the British Empire expanded, so did the reach of stout. Brewers began producing stronger, more robust versions designed to withstand long sea voyages to tropical climates. These “Foreign Extra Stouts,” often with higher alcohol content and intense flavours, became popular in the Caribbean and beyond, spreading the English stout tradition worldwide.
  • The Creamy Revolution: Nitro Stout’s English Pub Origins: While Guinness in Ireland is now synonymous with Nitro Stout, the style’s roots lie in the English pub. The use of nitrogen to create a smoother, creamier texture was a development that altered the way we consume dark beer.
  • The English Milk Stout’s Sweet Indulgence: The addition of lactose to sweeten stout was an English invention. This style was originally marketed as having health benefits, but it soon became loved for its dessert like qualities.

Renegade’s Tribute to English Stout Heritage

At Renegade, we honour this rich English brewing heritage by crafting our own Blackguard Nitro Stout. We respect the traditions that brought us this amazing drink, and are always looking to experiment and push the boundaries of what stout can be.

A Toast to English Ingenuity

Stout’s journey from the docks of London to the global stage is a testament to the innovation and passion of English brewers. It’s a story woven into the fabric of our nation’s brewing history, a story we’re proud to continue at Renegade Brewery. So, join us in raising a glass to the English origins of stout, a brew that continues to captivate and delight beer lovers around the world.
